Timeline: Post Saiyuki Reload
Personality: ((Genius, finds everything too easy and boring. Views survival as winning and consuming the others. As suggested by Koumyou, agrees that he's probably waiting to be 'consumed,' or rather, killed by someone. Until then goes setting up pieces for various 'games' in watching how the future plays out. Calculating, can be charismatic. Finger in many pies type of person. Thinks several steps ahead, in the sense of having back-up plans and is able to think quickly. Sado-masochist. Nihilist of several kinds; moral, existential, metaphysical, mereological and probably political as well. Toys and pushes many people's limits, such as Kougaiji and Genjyo. Baits people like Lirin, or uses them as bait. Does experiments and plants them without expectations, but to see how things unfold. Glad to be blind for several reasons, including ironic. Good actor. Er... other stuff. Spoiled Kami-sama but was a strict teacher, using whips as well. Still had him around as just a toy.
True motives aren't really revealed. The closest is a bet made with him and Koumyou to see if the 'darkness or sun take the moon' or something along those lines. He works as Gyoukumen Koushu's engineer to revive her lover, which requires all five sutras. Except, despite already having two for research he never let it be known that he had one as well. Instead it was hidden in a stuffed bunny that he talked to all of the time, and no one knew better. When deciding to amuse himself with resuming the title 'Ukoku' again he said that he was taking off for a little bit with a note on the computer, indicating how little the 'huge project' actually meant to him.
Witness to Ukoku's succession at Chouan said Ukoku was the 'darkness of night' and Koumyou was 'the moon.' Ukoku wonders, if that's the case, which of them gets swallowed up. They make it a 'bet' with the next rising 'sun' as the stakes. Refers to Koumyou a bit fondly, associating him with the actual moon that's around. At least he did. Can't exactly 'notice' the moon anymore, but still regards him as someone close.))
Background: Wiki link! So you know how in some shows, like Durarara!! for example, Izaya is behind everything that happens? Well, Ukoku is exactly that bastard. The one that's pulled the strings and made current events happen, and in the way they have. Unfortunately, the wiki isn't as forthcoming with his involvement as it could be, so I'll go over that as briefly as possible?
So essentially, this is some guy (whose original name is completely unknown,) that did everything that seemed interesting and challenging. This got him a doctorate at the age of 17. The only reason why he went to Zenou Temple is because he heard that becoming a Sanzo was the most difficult things to accomplish. Over the next 6 months, under the name 'Kenyuu,' he got along with all the other students. It was pretty much a game, exhibiting the right amount of charisma and fooling round enough for everyone to like him. At the same time, he excelled in all of the training fields. This allowed him to get the core of the lessons and just breeze through the rest with a bit of a humorous touch. Like... Writing smut, as it was the concentration that mattered more than the written content.Hey, those trashy novels were good sell and trade fodder for the rest. It was only Goudai Sanzo, who was getting ready to kick the bucket, and Koumyou Sanzo whom were able to look past it. Koumyou decided to poke the nest a little, getting a little insight to the nihilist side of Kenyuu. In exchange, Kenyuu had the joy of listening to the man fawn over his disciple (Kouryuu.)
A few days later the time had come for the exam to determine the next Sanzo, and had it's contestants chosen. (Some would theorize that Kenyuu actually set something up to make Goudai ill enough for the exam. It doesn't match up completely, but if he was getting bored enough...) Everyone had expected Kenyuu, who was top of the class, to be chosen. So when his name was left off the list, asking the reason apparently had shown exactly why he had been passed over. In not knowing the answer, he struck Goudai before anyone had been able to act, wanting to be told instead. Before anything is done, Koumyou grabs him to stop the conflict and put him into storage (and injuring Kenyuu's wrist as well.) That night while looking over the injury, the two talk with a door between them. Almost right away he asks if Koumyou can kill him, only to be shot down. It's revealed that (at least at that age,) he only felt alive when it was an eat or be eaten situation as he really had no apparent desires. It just seemed like that was how survival seemed to work. Then Koumyou asked, "so that someday, you too will be eaten?" Hearing that question, under the full moon, had struck him.
The next day, the day of the exam, Kenyuu 'crashed the party' so to speak, handlessly and wordlessly taking down two of the chosen examinees. Well, he made a gesture, but no actual contact was made. In asking Koumyou to keep out of the current event, the rest of the men were taken down in the same manner. Just cutting them down with a mantra, but having the skill and concentration to do so without actually speaking. With little effort, as Goudai had went to subdue Kenyuu, the Sanzo had been killed during the cry of a single crow. Something which becomes symbolic of 'Ukoku' from then on. Because when that happened, and he was still standing, a cry was definitely behind his calm smile. Because of this, Koumyou christens him Ukoku, which means 'the crow cries.'
However the mark on the forehead never appeared, marking him a heretical Sanzo by the gods. For a year he travelled with Koumyou before parting ways, the reasons not actually explained or known. At some point during this time he travelled far to the West and met Hazel and master. Picks up a boy to train and 'succeed' him as Sanzo (he gained the mark, but never the sutra. Also never given a Sanzo title or succession rank. Possibly just a redirection ploy.) and meets Koumyou about two years after that (as Kouryuu is 7 at this time.) They only spend the time and catch up during the night, with Ukoku getting ready to leave again when it's dawn again. Koumyou mentions meeting a witness to Ukoku's succession at Chouan; he said Ukoku was the 'darkness of night' and Koumyou was 'the moon.' Ukoku wonders, if that's the case, which of them gets swallowed up. They make it a 'bet' with the next rising 'sun' as the stakes.
Some events in Ukoku's life are more vague on when they had occurred. Some may have happened after the year of travel before parting ways with Koumyou and meeting him again several years later, or soon after the departure. Such as going far enough to the West, overseas, and meeting with Bishop Filbert. He had conveniently shown up in time to save the bishop from being overwhelmed by a youkai. Since then, Ukoku had stayed around them for a period of time; either disappearing or hanging around and acting like a tourist. During that time Ukoku had placed the ideas of how Shangri-la is, with humans and youkai living together, into a young Hazel's mind. After pushing Hazel into using spells for the first time and dealing with a 'monster of combined ravens,' he'd finally move on with his travels.
Another thing during this time of solitary travel occured when Ukoku had been going through a town and came across a young boy selling himself. The townsfolk jeered about how a monk wouldn't want to associate with something 'filthy,' but Ukoku's interests were caught. Possibly because of how the boy was about Kouryuu's age and also blond, something about his actions, or mere impulse. With that, he took the boy in as a 'disciple,' though it wasn't really too different from taking in a living toy more than anything else. While putting the boy under extreme and strenuous training, a kind almost abusive as there had been hints of actual torture tools being used, another part of their relationship involved spoiling the boy rotten. Almost like a prince, even. There was even a set of demon brothers (Kinkaku and Ginkaku) that ended up being a part of an experiment to give to the boy something to keep company. He took care of the boys and Ukoku continued with experiments, including a very special castle or temple that were filled with experimental toys under the boy's control.
There was one more time that Ukoku actually meets and reminisces with Koumyou one more time. Only being one night and leaving the boy to play with Kouryuu, they left by dawn with the older priest to die not much later. It's possible that, aside from setting a 'bet' with Ukoku, Koumyou had set other details up with the future in mind. It's nothing official and purposefully left vague, but would explain how sure he is about the night of Koumyou's death. That last meeting is also one of the last times that he uses the name 'Ukoku' until much later, and never uses the original robes again.
There is also a time when he meets Gyokumen Koshu, one of Gyumoah's mistresses, using the alias Ni Jyeni. (According to canon/word of 'God," Gyokumen Koshu wasn't always the manipulative and obsessed woman she ended up being in canon.) Aside from fulfilling sexual favors and keeping her satified, the idea of a project came to mind; to revive her former lover, Gyumoah. With stories of how bringing the 5 Tenchi Kaigen Kyoumon, the 'Founding Scriptures of Heaven and Earth,' would bring about great power to change the world as they had been used to create the world. Using the mix of what sutras they had, as this happened after Koumyou's death, with science and youkai magic, they revive one of the members of Gyumoah's family; Kougaiji. Though other actions, possibly before Kougaiji's release from being sealed, Gyumoah's DNA is extracted to use with Gyokumen's own data to create and give birth to Lirin; a key component to the revival as far as Gyokumen knows.
During these years between Koumyou's death and when the canon starts, the experiments that are conducted eventually escalate until it affected both the environment and people. The natural order started to change and alter both the landscapes and weather in Shangri-la. Youkai, normally 'docile' and co-habitating with humans started to go 'berserk' and attack humans. It was particularly effective around Kinzan temple, as the closer to Houtou castle the 'minus wave's' effects were towards the environment rather than the population. Other things that Dr Ni has done is to experiment with Kougaiji's body for various 'improvements' to see what effects specific changes produced, as well as suggesting Gyokumen use the demon prince's sealed mother as a bargaining chip to force him to follow the commands. It's because of this that Kougaiji targets the Sanzo group for the sutra.
- Meets up with Hazel again, telling him about youkai 'destroying Shangri-la' due to the Minus Wave
- Experiments and toys with Kougaiji, his sister Lirin and others
- Sends 'experiments' out at Sanzo-ikkou to see what happens. Generally done to pass time and for amusement
- Amused by Kougaiji 'rebelling' against the experiments and deciding to make his own way, 'following the light' he disappears to play with another side. Doesn't seem angry by the development
- Comes across Sanzo and the others. Triggers Hazel's memories about the demon in him and terrorizes Sanzo until Goku, Gojyo and Hakkai come to save him.
- Doesn't actually attack directly, but brushes off most, if not all attacks while everyone else ends up injured. It's not until Hakkai had secretly healed Genjyo enough to fire at him that an actual injury is sustained. While meant to be a headshot, given Sanzo's accuracy, it ends up missing vital points despite not being expected. One eye is damaged before Ukoku leaves the team exhausted and extremely injured. (Believed to be one eye because of the blood path and one half of the glasses being undamaged.)
- It's believed he takes out the other eye while overcome with what could be happiness or just extreme amusement as he 'finally attained true darkness.' Canon point is right after this.
Abilities/Additional Notes:
Genius
Scientist/Engineer/mixing 'magic' and technology
Monk training - Wordless mantras, strength, speed. Mantras can cut people with a gesture towards the target, or 'freeze' a person in place.
Muten Sutra - Nothingness & Death (Can progress life cycle of smaller living objects; making a flower bloom and wither.) Negate attack. Turn space into nothing and bend it (could possibly teleport with it too) Bending space and teleporting obviously nixed in Adstring. Negating limited, so extends like 'uprooting' a section of a mountain wouldn't actually be possible.
Presence causes coincidences like crickets shutting up, and the moon becoming obscured.
Blind - One eye shot, other damaged/ripped out (?) by self. Possible that he can make something to restore some kind of sight, but it seems like a development he likes. Going around blind doesn't hinder too much, as going around with a sense gone was expected in training.
Things taught to Kami-sama, probably already known by Ukoku (generally not used.)
